Childproof home safety tips

One of a parent’s biggest concerns when raising children is how to keep them safe. A parent, no matter how cautious or watchful, can’t always guarantee the safety of kids, even when they’re at home.

According to studies, household injuries are one of the main reasons children are bought to the ER. While supervision is still the best way to avoid accidents, making sure your home is a child-friendly environment can significantly reduce the chance of your child getting injured.

Here are a few child safety tips you can follow:

  • Keep medicine or vitamins in your home under lock and key, out of sight, and out of reach. The same rule applies for liquor or dangerous substances such as bleach or bug spray.
  • Never leave a smallchild alone in the bathroom – even for a second. When they’re very young, there’s a pretty big risk of drowning or slipping in bathtubs or wet tile floors. They might accidentally turn on the hot water tap and scald themselves.
  • The cords of window blinds are a strangulation hazard, especially if your kids are especially active inside the house. If your windows have looped cords, it’s a good idea to cut them into two strands, and place themout of reach.
  • Move your furniture away from upper-level windowsto prevent any possibility of your child crawling out and falling. Even if the law in your city does not require them, installing window guards is a great additional safety measure.
  • Always keep small objects out of reach, as your child might accidently swallow them and cause him or her to choke. Also make sure your kid’s toys are age appropriate to avoid injury and choking hazards.
  • Equip your home with safety gatesto prevent kids from wandering into high-risk areas like staircases, kitchens, or bathrooms.
  • Take the time to teach your children about safety. Making them more aware of potential dangers may just be the very thing that can prevent accidents or injury.

Answers to your home inspection FAQs

Q: What is a home inspection for, and do I really need it?

A: Because buying a home is a huge investment, knowing as much as you can about a piece of property is the best way to avoid future problems. Home inspections will tell you repairs that are needed, as well as proper maintenance procedures required to keep homes in good shape.

For sellers, home inspections pinpoint areas that need to be fixed or improved so that you can get the most value when you put your home on the market.

Q: Should I buy a home if the inspection reveals problems?

A:Every home will have issues. A home inspection tells you exactly what to expect to help you make an informed decision.

Consider your budget, so you can determine whether it’s going to be worth fixing the problems on top of buying the home. In some cases, the seller may agree to take on a few of the repairs or to lower their asking price.

Q: Theinspector clears the home, declaring it to be problem free and in good condition. Did I just waste money on a useless home inspection?

A:No, because now you’re sure you’ll be buying a home in tip-top condition, one that’ll require almost no repairs (for now, at least). The home inspectionhas succeeded in revealingmore information on the home and provided you with a written report which you can use for future reference.

Q: Do I have to be present during a home inspection?

A:No, but it’s a good idea to be around. You’ll find out more about the nature of each problem identified by the home inspector. You can ask your questions. You’ll know exactly what you need to do to repair or maintain the home.

Q: How long do home inspections usually take?

A:Home inspections usually last for about two to three hours, depending on the size of the home. Most home inspectors can give you a detailed report within a day or two.
